About Metal Clay
Metal Clay
is pure silver (or gold) mixed with an organic binder and water. It is extremely malleable, and may be rolled, sculpted, shaped, stamped and more. There are no expensive tools to invest in as much of the creation can be done using your hands, and some simple
hand tools
, such as files. Whether you are making jewelry, beads or sculptures, the Metal Clay air-dries quite quickly, and then may be fired in a kiln, or with a hand-held butane torch (think creme brulee), or a gas-top stove. The binder and water burn away, leaving you a creation made from pure sintered silver metal. You may then choose to further work your piece using traditional metalsmithing techniques, such as forging, fusing, polishing and patinating.
Metal clay
is sold in sealed packets to keep it moist and workable. The Silver Metal Clay is also available in a variety of other forms.
There is a thick paste-like pre-filled
syringe
which can be used to extrude the softened Clay (like decorating a cake), there are also small jars of
paste
to use as slip,
paper-like sheets
(perfect for origami). There is also an
Oil Paste
type used to join two fired pieces together, and an
Overlay Paste
type, which was designed specifically to be used on glass and porcelain.
Art Clay 22k Gold Paste
is a wonderful and economical way to work with gold. The paste is painted onto the fired silver metal, then refired at which point it bonds with the silver and gives your piece a lovely gold accent.
Another way of adding gold to your piece is by using
24k gold foil
, and applying using an ancient Korean gilding technique called Keum-Boo, which creates a new alloy on the surface of the fine silver, and a permanent bond.
